Atypical Pneumonia Nucleic Acid Amplified Test (NAAT)
CPT 87581, 87486, 87541, 87798
Test Code 7000075
Synonyms PPLO, Pneumoplex, Mycoplasma, Chlamydophila, Legionella, Walking pneumonia, Chlamydia
Test Includes Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) for Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydophila pneumoniae, Legionella pneumophila, and Tatlockia micdadei in respiratory specimens.
Specimen Bronchial Alveolar Lavage (BAL); Bronchial Wash; Nasal Aspirate; Nasal Wash; Nasopharyngeal; Sputum
Volume BAL: 5.0 mL; Bronchial Wash: 5.0 mL; Sputum: 5.0 mL
Container For Nasopharyngeal specimens, M-4 or M-6 AND Liquid Stuart's bacterial transport (Dark Green-Capped mini-tip swab)
Special Instructions Although Legionella testing has been validated on swab specimens submitted in viral transport, it is preferred when collecting a nasopharyngeal swab specimen to submit two swabs; one mini-tip swab in viral transport (M-4 or M-6) for Chlamydophila and Mycoplasma and one mini-tip swab in bacterial transport (Liquid Stuart's or Liquid Amies) for Legionella.
Specimen Prep BAL or BRONCHIAL WASH: Collect specimen using aseptic technique and accepted methods. Submit 5.0 mL (0.5 mL minimum) in a sterile container without additives.; NASAL ASPIRATE: Insert a depressed bulb deeply into either nostril. Suction while withdrawing bulb. Transfer aspirate to a sterile container without additives.; NASAL WASH: Aspirate 3.0-5.0 mL sterile saline into rubber bulb. Press one nostril closed. Insert bulb into other nostril. Squeeze saline in and aspirate back into bulb. Transfer to sterile container without additives.; NASOPHARYNGEAL: Insert a flexible mini-tip swab through the nostril into the nasopharynx. Rotate gently and withdraw. Place swab into M-4 or M-6 Viral Transport Medium.; SPUTUM: Have patient cough deeply and collect entire specimen (0.5 mL minimum) of expectorated sputum in a sterile container without additives.

Comments Testing is only performed on the respiratory specimens listed. Testing cannot be performed on throat or tissue specimens. All new positive specimens are called. This test does not distinguish between living and dead organisms and should not be used as a test-of-cure. If V RESPNAAT testing is also requested for a swab specimen, collect and submit a separate swab.
